Should email senders be worried about the iOS 18 Apple Mail overhaul? Learn what it is, when it's out, and what to do about it.
Mail Categories Apple’s new Mail Categories organizes emails into sections like Primary, Transactions, Updates, and Promotions, helping you quickly find important messages. If needed, readers can switch back to the standard list view with a button in the top right corner of the Mail app. The changes were implemented for iPhone users in late 2024. The new look for Mail is expected to go live for Mac and iPad users with the upcoming release of iOS 18.4.With half of all email users on Apple Mail, this major update could reshape reading habits—and impact how critical emails reach inboxes. Here are 5 of the biggest changes from my test run of the 18.2 Apple Mail update:Apple Mail’s redesign resembles the iPhone Messages app, grouping emails from the same sender for a cleaner, more intuitive experience. It declutters the inbox but marks a big change for those used to the classic layout. Fortunately, Apple lets users switch back if they prefer the old view. When newsletters land in the Updates tab, only the top portion of the newsletter can be seen. The rest is hidden under a See More link. Now that 18.2 is here, you’ve got to grab attention fast—assume readers won’t click “See More”. This recent email from Lush nails it:Readers can now view all your past newsletters in one place, making it simpler to revisit missed issues. After 18.2, expect more late opens, which could give content a longer shelf life. Email preheader text (the little snippet after the Subject Line) is gone for good.

And now, with iOS 18.3 officially released, it’s clear that Apple is building on the email changes introduced in 18.2. These foundational updates, including inbox tabs and AI-powered features, shape how marketers approach the Apple Mail ecosystem.Understanding these changes is crucial, as they will likely inform ongoing developments in iOS’s email experience. iOS 18.2 features changes that will impact email subscribers — including those on ESPs like Gmail and Yahoo — who use Apple Mail on their iPhone, iPad or Mac device. The changes introduced by iOS 18.2 fall into two main categories: The expansion of AI in email.Adoption is relatively slow; Statcounter estimates iOS 18.2 adoption to be below 6% a month after the release. Open rates aren’t reliable since most impacted users have already opted into the Mail Privacy Protection in iOS 15. While we’ve seen muted impacts on click rate, the actual effects are difficult to isolate given external conditions, including email content, holiday messaging and behaviors and seasonal variance.
The official Mail app for iPhone is expected to pick up some incredible new features in iOS 18. Naturally, the features are heavily tied to AI.
We’re just days away from Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2024), which means we’re about to get our first look at iOS 18. The new iPhone operating system is expected to get RCS texting in the iMessage app, more customization options for the home screen, and maybe a significant design change overall. Now comes word that changes will be made to the native Mail app. According to AppleInsider, the Mail app is about to undergo a significant transformation. It’s getting a powerful new search tool, Smart Replies, automatic sorting for different email types, and more. But the real excitement lies in the app’s expected integration of AI functionality, a feature becoming a hallmark of iOS 18. ... First, Apple plans to add enhanced search results within the iPhone’s email app. The results will now include information from the Contacts app, locations, and locally stored documents. This should make finding emails quicker than before. Most of these Mail app changes should also be coming to the iMessage app and Siri. It isn’t yet known how the virtual assistant will be able to use this information. We will find out very soon, as the annual WWDC keynote begins at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET Monday, June 10. In addition to unveiling iOS 18, we can expect Apple to introduce iPadOS 18, tvOS 18, watchOS 11, visionOS 2, and macOS 15.With Smart Replies, users can use AI to respond to messages quickly. The new tool is said to streamline email communication and help everyone save time.

Jamie sighs, checks the system, and confirms what she already knows: the email was sent, delivered, and is sitting unread in the customer’s “Transactions” tab—a place many customers don’t even realize exists yet in their newly updated iOS 18 Mail app.And while marketing emails are getting all the headlines, your critical transactional emails—you know, the ones people actually want to receive—are feeling the impact too. iOS 18 is now available with significant updates to Apple Mail. We discuss how these changes will impact your sends through Iterable.
The past few Apple releases were heavily geared toward security patches and updates to various other applications. There hasn’t been a significant change impacting email since iOS 16, which focused on enhancements to the user experience in Mail with additions like scheduling messages, follow-up reminders, and more. However, iOS 18 is different. With iOS 18, Apple has introduced several major updates to their Mail app. Important messages will be surfaced at the top of the inbox. Apple categorizes important messages largely based on time-sensitive topics like flights, transportation, meeting invites, and more. Gone are the days when you had to sift through a mail thread with many reply emails attached. We all know by now the role of the preheader can significantly impact your email open rates. The preheader allows for a glance into what content is included in the message and influences whether or not the consumer will open your message. With the latest iOS 18 updates leveraging AI, it is more important than ever to ensure your preheader offers a concise one-sentence summary of your content. When looking at an email as a consumer, you often see beautiful images of products, services, and people. However, the story behind the scenes is a bit different. From a code perspective, images are nothing more than ugly code with likely an href pointing to an image. This is important because that is what AI sees and consumes. It does not see that beautiful consumer-facing image unless you explicitly call out, through alt text, what that image is. With iOS 18 leveraging Apple Intelligence to generate summaries of the email content, it is critical that our emails are super detailed and that no area is left up to AI interpretation.
Is there a way to revert the email app back to the way it was? These new icons, whether viewing them in the Categories or View mode is annoying.
